Set up in 5 minutes

You only do this once. Afterwards Unlock runs quietly in the background and starts when you log in.

Before you start

You need a Grok Bot account. Unlock adds your Mac as a custom connector in Grok Bot. If you don't have one yet, get Grok Bot first; it only takes a minute.

1. Run the installer

  1. Open Downloads and find Install Unlock.command.
  2. Right-click it → Open, then click Open again. macOS asks this the first time because the installer isn't notarized by Apple yet.
  3. If macOS says it "can't be opened": go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
  4. A window shows progress for about 30 seconds. When it says Done you can close it.

2. Connect Grok

Your connect page opens after install. Click Copy for Grok, paste it into your Grok Bot chat, and Grok connects itself. You only do this once.

3. Ask Grok: "finish setup"

Grok checks every macOS permission and tells you in plain words which switch to turn on, opening the right System Settings screen for you. Most people never need the manual steps below.

4. Check it worked

Ask Grok: "Is my Mac connected?" You should see your Mac's name, the Unlock version and all permissions OK. If something is off, Grok says which step to fix.

Manual fallback: set permissions yourself

Allow Full Disk Access (Messages, Desktop, Documents, Downloads)

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
  2. Click +, press ⌘⇧G, paste the Python path shown on your connect page and by Grok (on most Macs /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin/python3) and click Open. Turn it on.
  3. This lets Unlock read your Messages history and your Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded.

Allow Automation (Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Reminders)

  1. Unlock needs access to Mail (and Calendar, Notes and so on). The first time Grok uses an app, macOS asks for it. Click OK. For now macOS names the helper “python3” in this prompt; that is Unlock.
  2. Changed your mind? System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation → python3 (Unlock) → toggle apps on or off.
  3. For Calendar, Contacts and Reminders you may also see a separate prompt. Click Allow Full Access.
  4. For Desktop tidying, allow access to Desktop, Documents and Downloads when asked.
  5. Unlock needs access to Photos: when macOS asks, click Allow. Unlock only looks and makes copies; it never changes your library.

Your first week

  1. Ask Grok "what's this week's small step?". Unlock suggests one small tidy-up (slow and steady). Say yes or skip.
  2. Try "show my reminders by project, A/B/C" and, on Friday, "weekly review".
  3. Want everything at once instead? Say "suggest everything at once".
  4. Alarms and arrive/leave reminders need your iPhone; Grok gives you the recipe.

5. Optional: stay reachable

Grok can only reach your Mac while it's awake. If you want it to work while you're away:

  1. Open System Settings → Energy (on a laptop: Battery → Options) and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
  2. In the same place, turn on Wake for network access.
  3. Or just ask Grok: "keep my Mac awake while it's plugged in". Unlock keeps it awake without an admin password, and the screen can still turn off. Ask again to turn it off.

Unlock reconnects to Grok by itself within about a minute after your Mac wakes up.
